Traditionally known as "the government district", the Second Ward of Uptown Charlotte is home to city and county office buildings, county courthouse, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools administration, the Law Enforcement Center and the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank. The Second Ward is bordered by Trade Street running East and West, Tryon Street running North and South, and 277 as a southernmost border. More recently Second Ward has received a great deal of attention as the future home of the Nascar Hall of Fame and a growing tourism sector of the Uptown with a new entertainment complex and convention center. Donald Trump has announced that the Trump Organization is considering a site in Second Ward as a potential mixed-use development site that will combine retail, hotel, commercial office space, and residential uses into one tower.

2nd Ward Uptown Charlotte

In addition to the Nascar Hall of Fame and residential developments, the city is slated to move the educational headquarters out of the Uptown as a redevelopment program that will create a new urban village in the center of the city. Currently called, Brooklyn Village, this redevelopment will provide affordable housing to individuals looking for an Uptown lifestyle. The plan calls for both condminium, apartment, and office space to be developed in this new urban village in the heart of the Uptown.

The largest entertainment and shopping center the Uptown has ever see will open in 2008 in the Second Ward. The new mixed-use development, called Epicenter, will be home to restaurants, bars, retail shops, a movie theatre, hotel, and condominium. The Epicenter is sure to be a hub of activity for the future of the Second Ward and the center of much commerce for years to come.
