Fix-Ups for the Unhandy PDF Print E-mail
One of the greatest parts of being a homeowner is the ability to customize your home. Most people have limited “handyman skills” and most might be considered “Unhandy”. For those of you who would be lost in replacing a garage disposal or even changing an electrical outlet, here are some easy projects for the unhandy-man (or woman).

Replacing door knobs:

Changing out a door knob is typically a simple project that involves unscrewing and screwing in two screws. A home that has old doors and old hardware (hinges and/or knob) can benefit greatly from a new door knob. Depending on the age of the hardware, changing out the door knob may require a little more work but can typically be changed in 5-10 minutes.

New Light Fixtures:

On the surface, this project may seem like a complicated one. However, changing out a light fixture is typically a simple project that anyone can do. Two screws and three wires are all that is typically involved in changing out a light. The first time may take a little longer, but after a little practice changing a light fixture can be accomplished in 10-15 minutes.

Painting a Room:

For those who are scared of painting, the process is much simpler than you might imagine. If you want to learn the basics before you try it out on your home, Home Depot typically conducts seminars on Saturday mornings to show the basic of painting. A roller, paintbrush, pan, paint and drop cloth are all you need to change the color of any room.

Hang New Blinds:

If you have old or broken blinds, changing out your blinds can be as simple as removing two plastic clips. If you don’t have any blinds, installing blinds requires screwing in four screws—two on each side. Installing or changing out your blinds is a simple project that goes a long way in making a room fresh and new.

Cleaning Carpets:

Vacuuming your carpets is different than cleaning. We’re talking steam-cleaning here. This can be done by renting a cleaning unit from Home Depot or buying a steam cleaner from Wal-Mart. Depending on how often you want to clean, it may be worth the investment to purchase a steam cleaner. The amount of dirt raised from a steam cleaner can be scary but it’s worth the time and energy to maintain your carpets as well as possible.
